"Labu Sayong"

 "Labu"--a vase and "Sayong" a village. It stands for an elegant, gourd-shaped pottery jug that is used to keep water cool. The "labu sayong" displays some fine designs inspired by Malaysian tradition and culture. Such motives that can be found as ornamentation on the labu sayong are designs based on local flowers (bunga tanjung, bunga pecah empat), spices (clove, star anise) and leaves (bamboo shoots).


“Labu Sayong” also stands for a ceramic pottery with magical function. It can be used to store water for drinking purpose. The jug, with the characteristic double bulb design, is burnt to a black colour that gives it the ability to cool its content quickly. It is even believed that the drinking water stored in the labu sayong has certain health properties to cure common ailments like cough and fever.
“Labu Sayong” divided on size, color burning, kind or form and whether the use of jewellery or drinking purposes.

Many of us assume that “Labu Sayong” solely for the purpose of drinking. This assumption is no longer relevant to current time.

Now “Labu Sayong” has been commercialized as jewellery products despite of drinking purposes. “Labu Sayong” is designed in various ways. They are modified from a common ceramic jar to bedside lamps, a waterfall garden art, office decor and many more. Therefore, keep in mind “Labu Sayong is just for decor” is not true.  Let us explore more for the manufacturing process of “Labu Sayong”.
